February 20, 2009, Newsletter Issue #137: Alpha and Beta Hydroxyl Are Common Anti Aging Product Ingredients

Tip of the Week

There are two main forms of exfoliants found in common anti aging skin care products: alpha and beta hydroxyls.

Alpha Hydroxyl: This is a fruit acid, made from citrus. You can get an alpha hydroxyl treatment from a licensed dermatologist in the form of a chemical peel. However, smaller concentrations are contained in common anti aging products. It often appears as lactic acid, AHA or glycolic acid.

Beta Hydroxyl: A gentler acid, it is also listed under BHA or salicylic acid. It is one of the ingredients found in aspirin and is safe to use daily, however, the effects take longer to manifest.

Both products cause skin to be sensitive to the sun’s ray, so it especially important to wear sunscreen and avoid direct sunlight.
